F996 is a replacement post-motor HEPA filter for the Dyson DC27 and DC28 bagless upright vacuums. It sits in the exhaust path and filters air after it has passed through the motor, which is the last stage before air returns to the room. Post-motor and pre-motor filters are different parts
The DC27 and DC28 use two filters and they are not interchangeable. This part is the post-motor filter, a replaceable cartridge with a recommended replacement interval of every three to six months. The pre-motor filter is a separate part, Dyson 919780-01, and unlike this one it is washable and reusable. If suction has dropped and you are not sure which filter you need, check both positions before ordering. Do not wash this post-motor filter, as it is not rated as washable.
