Oreck Fan and Fan Housing Assembly for XL21 Uprights (09-77230-51)
When an Oreck XL21 suddenly gets loud and stops picking up, the fan is the first thing to check. Hard debris that makes it past the bag, a coin or a screw picked up off a floor, will chip or crack a vacuum fan. A damaged fan goes out of balance, which is where the new noise comes from, and it stops moving air, which is where the lost suction comes from.
This kit is the standard repair. It is the newer one-piece housing design supplied with the fan already installed, so the job becomes a housing swap rather than a fan-pulling exercise. That matters because pressing a fan on and off a motor shaft is the step most likely to go wrong on a home repair.
What is in the kit
- Fan housing with the fan installed
- Bag spring, riveted in place on the housing
- Felt motor seal
- Thrust washer
- Lock washer
Built for
- Oreck XL21 upright vacuums, the family this assembly is specified for.
- Model U7070EC4, which this kit also fits.
- Suction loss after picking up hard debris, the classic chipped-fan symptom.
- Vacuum shops and facility maintenance keeping a fleet of XL21 machines in service.
Symptoms that point to the fan
A cracked or chipped fan usually announces itself three ways at once: a noticeable drop in suction at the nozzle, a new rattle, whine or vibration that was not there before, and often a change in pitch when the motor spins up. If the bag is fresh, the belt is intact, the brush roll turns freely and the airway is clear but the machine still will not pick up, the fan is the next suspect. Inspecting it means opening the housing, which is why replacing the assembly is often the more sensible move once you are already in there.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know the fan is the problem and not the motor?
A bad fan typically gives you strong motor sound with weak airflow, often with a new vibration or rattle. A failing motor usually shows up as reduced speed, a burning smell, or the machine cutting out. If the motor still spins up strongly but the suction is gone and the airway is clear, the fan is the likely cause.
Does this include the fan, or just the housing?
It includes the fan. The kit is supplied as a housing with the fan installed, along with the bag spring riveted in place, a felt motor seal, thrust washer and lock washer.
Will it fit any Oreck XL?
It is specified for XL21 uprights and also fits U7070EC4. Oreck used several housing designs across the XL family, so verify your model number or the part number on the old housing before ordering. We are happy to check for you.
Is this a repair a reasonably handy owner can do?
Many owners do it, and supplying the fan pre-installed in the housing removes the hardest step. It still involves opening the machine and working around the motor shaft. If you are not comfortable with that, a vacuum service shop can fit it quickly.
What causes a vacuum fan to break in the first place?
Hard objects reaching the fan. Coins, screws, small stones and similar debris that get past the bag or through a tear will chip a fan blade. Replacing bags before they overfill and checking the bag for damage is the practical prevention.
