The 18-inch scalloped felt Sidewinder is the wide-path hard-floor head for crews who found that a plain felt face drags on their floors. The scalloped edge is notched rather than continuous, which lets air pass along the sides of the head instead of sealing it down against a very smooth surface. On freshly finished VCT, polished tile and sealed hardwood that is the difference between a tool that glides through a corridor and one the operator has to lean on.
Built for
- Long corridors, lobbies, atriums and cafeteria floors that need maximum path width
- Freshly finished or highly polished floors where a solid felt face tends to seal down and drag
- Sealed hardwood, polished tile, VCT and luxury vinyl plank
- Facility and contract cleaning crews running Sandia Sidewinder wands on Raven backpacks
How the Sidewinder design works
A Sidewinder head mounts on a flexible neck and swings through a full circle, so the face of the tool stays flat on the floor no matter what angle the wand is held at. Instead of pushing a vacuum head forward and back, the operator sweeps it side to side the way you would run a dust mop, standing upright rather than bent over the wand. Crews that vacuum long corridors and open floor for hours at a time generally report that the sweeping motion is easier on the lower back than push-pull vacuuming and covers a run of floor in fewer passes.
Between the two 18-inch felt options, plain felt gives the most continuous wipe and scalloped felt gives the easier push. Crews maintaining high-gloss floors, or working on floors that have just been burnished, tend to prefer the scalloped face for exactly that reason. Both are gentle on a finish; the difference is how the head behaves against a very smooth surface, not how much it can scratch.
If your route is broken up by furniture, doorways and fixtures rather than open floor, the 15-inch scalloped felt version of this head handles the same surfaces in a more maneuverable width.

Fitment
This head is part of Sandia's Sidewinder accessory group and attaches to Sandia Sidewinder wands, including the 59-inch one-piece and two-piece wands. It is an accessory head, not a complete wand assembly, so you will need a Sidewinder wand on the machine to use it. If you are not sure which wand is on your backpack, call us with the machine model and we will check it against Sandia's parts list.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose scalloped felt over plain felt?
The notched edge vents air along the sides of the head. On very smooth or freshly finished floors that stops the tool from sealing itself to the surface, so it pushes more easily.
Is it safe on a high-gloss finish?
Felt is the gentlest face in Sandia's Sidewinder hard-floor group and is the type specified for finished floors. Keep the felt clean, since trapped grit is what marks a floor.
What is the difference between this and the 15-inch scalloped felt head?
Width only. The 18-inch covers more floor per pass for open areas; the 15-inch is easier to work around furniture and through doorways.
Does this replace my wand or attach to it?
It attaches. This is a Sidewinder head that mounts on a Sandia Sidewinder wand; the wand connects to the backpack vacuum.
