How the slide-on system works
The holding case is the durable half of the pair and the carbide is the consumable. When a carbide insert is worn, it slides out of the case and a fresh one slides in. There is no wedge to drive and no bolt to chase, which is the whole reason EDCO moved to the wedge-less Magna-Trap slide-on system: tooling changes that used to mean hammering wooden wedges take well under a minute.
The carbide insert itself has four usable sides. You rotate it as each edge dulls before the insert is replaced, so one insert carries four working lives, and the holding case outlasts many inserts. EDCO's replacement carbide for this tooling is the 12407 Tungsert, sold in 6 packs. The holding case is sold as the carrier only; carbide is a separate purchase.
Strip coatings, do not grind concrete
This matters enough that EDCO prints it on the product itself. Strip-Serts are designed to strip away coatings, not to grind concrete. Grinding concrete with Strip-Serts dulls the sharp edges quickly, and once the edges are gone the cutting action stops. Surface prep pros make the same point from the other direction: old mastic acts as a lubricant under diamond tooling, so the diamonds slide around instead of cutting and the mastic gums up and spreads. The efficient sequence is carbide first to take off the bulk of the coating, then diamond tooling for the concrete itself.
