Urine problems get treated in the wrong order more often than any other carpet job. A crew reaches straight for an enzyme or an encapsulating deodorizer, the smell comes back a week later, and the customer calls. The reason is chemistry: urine dries into alkaline salt residue and leaves behind sticky lipids, and those deposits sit between your deodorizer and the contamination it is supposed to treat. HydraMaster UPS is the step that comes first.
UPS is a synergistic blend of acid neutralizers, detergents, odor counteractants and decontamination deodorizers. Sprayed on as a first response, it dissolves and dislodges those alkaline salts and neutralizes the gummy contamination, so whatever you apply next actually reaches the deposit. Specialty surfactants carry the active ingredients down into the fiber instead of leaving them on the tips. Because it carries its own odor counteractant and decontamination deodorizer, it can eliminate the odor outright on some lighter deposits - and on the serious ones it makes the enzyme or encapsulant that follows dramatically more effective.
Built for
- First-response treatment of pet and human urine deposits before any enzyme or encapsulating deodorizer
- Tannin spotting - coffee, tea, wine and soft drink spills on carpet and upholstery
- Neutralizing and breaking down ice melt residue tracked into entryway carpet over winter
- Salt and alkaline based spots that an alkaline pre-spray will not touch
- Carpet cleaning and restoration companies that want one acid-side product covering urine work and spotting
Why the order of operations matters
Urine leaves an alkaline residue as it dries. Enzymes and encapsulants are designed to act on the organic contamination, not to cut through crystallized salt and lipid buildup - so when they are applied to an untreated deposit, a good share of the product never reaches what it is meant to digest. Pretreating with UPS takes the residue out of the way first. That is also what makes it a genuine acid detergent spotter: the same acid-side chemistry that dissolves urine salts is what neutralizes tannin and alkaline spots and cuts ice melt residue. Treat and rinse thoroughly, and follow HydraMaster mixing and use directions along with a fiber test in an inconspicuous area.

Frequently asked questions
Do I still need an enzyme deodorizer if I use UPS?
On light deposits UPS can eliminate the odor on its own, since it contains an odor counteractant and a decontamination deodorizer. On heavier or repeat contamination, use UPS first and then apply your enzyme or encapsulating deodorizer - the pretreatment is what lets that product work faster and more effectively.
Why pretreat instead of going straight to the deodorizer?
Dried urine leaves alkaline salt residue and sticky lipids that physically block your deodorizer from reaching the contamination. UPS dissolves and dislodges that layer first, so the follow-up product acts on the actual source rather than on the crust over it.
Can UPS be used as a general spotter?
Yes - it is an effective acid detergent spotter for tannin, salt and alkaline based spots. Cleaners use it on coffee, tea, wine and soft drink spills, and to break down ice melt compounds tracked into carpet.
Is it safe on all carpet?
It is formulated for carpet and upholstery, but as with any acid-side product, mix and use it according to HydraMaster directions and test in an inconspicuous area first - particularly on wool, natural fibers and anything with an unknown dye system.
What does a case contain?
Four one-gallon jugs of UPS concentrate, part number 800-475-B.
