Every carpet cleaner has had the moment: you pull the wand, look at the recovery tank, and it is 90 percent foam with almost no water under it. HydraMaster DEFOAM is a powdered defoaming additive that kills that foam before it reaches your machine. This is the 4 x 8.0 lb jug case - a working supply for a truckmount operator or a portable-extractor crew running commercial accounts where previously shampooed carpet is the norm.
Built for
- Truckmount owner-operators protecting a blower from moisture carryover
- Portable extractor crews where foam reaching the vac motor means an electrical failure
- Restoration teams extracting heavily detergented or previously shampooed carpet
- In-house facility crews running rental or entry-level extractors
Use cases
- Previously shampooed or over-detergented carpet. This is where foam comes from. Lightly shake DEFOAM over the carpet before cleaning and the residue breaks down on contact instead of whipping into foam in the vac line.
- Protecting the machine. Foam carries moisture, detergent and soil into places they do not belong. On a portable, that moisture goes through an electric vacuum motor and shortens its life. On a truckmount, blower clearances can be as tight as a hundredth of an inch, and it does not take much rust to lock one up.
- Long commercial jobs. Add roughly half a cup to the recovery tank or through the vacuum hose to stop the tank from filling with foam and forcing an early dump.
Why powder instead of liquid
The complaint operators have about liquid defoamers is residue - a sticky film left behind that attracts soil and shows up as rapid resoiling on the next visit. DEFOAM's crystal carrying agents dissolve completely when they contact water or detergent solution, so the whole product extracts out and leaves nothing behind.
Two other practical points: the active agent is the same class used in food processing, which matters when you are working around a kitchen or a daycare, and the odorless granules do not shift pH or interfere with your cleaning chemistry. That means you can use it mid-job without recalculating anything.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my recovery tank fill with foam?
Almost always because the carpet holds detergent residue from previous shampooing or over-application of a cleaning agent. The extraction process whips that residue into foam. A defoamer breaks it down before it collects in the tank.
Can foam actually damage my machine?
Yes. Foam carries moisture, detergent and soil residue. On a portable extractor that moisture passes through an electric vacuum motor and causes premature failure. On a truckmount the concern is rust inside the blower, where clearances can be as small as one hundredth of an inch.
How much do I use?
A common approach is about 1/2 cup added to the recovery tank or drawn in through the vacuum hose, or a light shake over the carpet before you begin cleaning on jobs you expect to foam.
Will it leave residue in the carpet?
No. The crystal carrying agents dissolve completely when wetted by water or detergent solution so the product extracts out. This is the main advantage over liquid defoamers, which can leave a sticky film that attracts soil.
Will it change my cleaning solution's pH?
No. The granules are odorless and do not alter pH or affect the performance of the cleaning agent you are using.
