The Aztec UltraGrind is a 30-inch propane-powered planetary grinder and polisher built for contractors who spend more time solving power problems than grinding. On a big-box retail floor, a warehouse, a school or a distribution center, the practical obstacle is rarely the concrete - it is finding 230V or 480V three-phase service, running cord to it, or renting and fueling a tow-behind generator. This machine removes that step entirely: roll it off the trailer, set a cylinder, turn the key and start cutting.
Contractors consistently describe the setup time, not raw power, as the reason they move to propane. A machine that is producing five minutes after it comes off the truck changes what a shift is worth, particularly on overnight retail work where the store reopens on a fixed clock.
Built for
- Large-area grinding, honing and polishing without site power. Big-box retail, warehouses, schools and distribution centers where three-phase service is unavailable, already committed, or too far from the work.
- New construction ahead of the electrician. Slab prep, leveling trowel marks and knocking down high spots on buildings where permanent power is not energized yet.
- Coating and mastic removal. Up to 780 lbs of grinding pressure through three gear-driven heads for aggressive removal before a polish or a resinous system.
- Long production shifts. Crews running 12- to 16-hour days swap a propane cylinder in minutes rather than waiting on a battery charge.
- Full-floor jobs paired with an edger. The quick-change plates are interchangeable with the Aztec UltraEdge, so the perimeter finish matches the field without a second diamond inventory.
Propane, indoors, honestly
The engine is EPA and CARB certified with a catalytic muffler and meets US Green Building Council LEED IEQ Credit 3.4 requirements for indoor air quality, and a properly maintained propane machine should produce tailpipe carbon monoxide well under 100 ppm. That makes it appropriate for ventilated commercial interiors. It does not make ventilation optional. Documented carbon monoxide incidents on propane floor equipment trace back to sealed spaces and to engines running rich from dirty air filters and skipped oil changes - not to propane itself. Keep the maintenance schedule, keep air moving, and monitor. Small enclosed rooms with no openable doors or windows are not the right application for this machine, and neither are occupied offices or medical spaces, where an electric or battery grinder is the better tool.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run a propane grinder indoors?
Yes, in properly ventilated spaces. The engine is EPA and CARB certified with a catalytic muffler and meets LEED IEQ Credit 3.4 for indoor air quality, and a well-maintained machine should stay well under 100 ppm tailpipe carbon monoxide. Small sealed rooms with no openable doors or windows are not suitable, and occupied offices or medical facilities are better served by an electric machine.
How many diamonds does a full set take?
Three heads holding four diamonds each, so a complete set is twelve 3-inch pucks. The quick-change plate system lets you swap between metal-bond and resin-bond stacks without tools, and the same plates fit the Aztec UltraEdge.
Will it grind wet or dry?
Both. The 8-gallon onboard water tank feeds wet grinding and dust suppression, and dual vacuum ports connect to a dust extractor such as the Aztec UltraVac for dry work. Wet grinding on propane is efficient because you drop both the collector and its cords.
How does it compare to an electric grinder of the same size?
Propane wins on jobsite freedom - no cord, no three-phase hunt, no generator, and immediate start. Electric wins on noise and on occupied-space work, since it is quieter and needs no ventilation planning. If you mostly work indoors with power already available, electric makes sense; if you are on sites without power or you control the jobsite environment, propane pays for itself in setup time.
Do I need a separate machine for the edges?
A 30-inch planetary cannot reach the perimeter, corners or under fixtures, so that work otherwise falls to a hand grinder. The Aztec UltraEdge is the companion machine, and because the quick-change plates are interchangeable the same diamonds run on both.
