Champion 12.5 kW Home Standby Generator with 100-Amp NEMA 3R Outdoor Automatic Transfer Switch, Model 100179
Note: special order item. Special order items are non-returnable.
The 100179 is Champion's answer for a homeowner who wants more than the bare essentials backed up. It combines a 12.5-kilowatt standby generator with the ATS100, a 100-amp automatic transfer switch carrying a 16-circuit load center - enough capacity to keep central air conditioning, heating, kitchen appliances, a sump or well pump, lighting and a home office running through a multi-day outage instead of choosing between them.
Installation is permanent and the operation is hands-off. The generator ties into your existing natural gas or propane supply, starts automatically when utility power fails, and returns to standby when service is restored. It runs a weekly self-diagnostic test on its own, and the onboard battery charger keeps the starting battery ready between outages.
Built for
- Larger homes and generous circuit lists. Sixteen circuits at 100 amps covers HVAC plus the appliance and outlet loads most families actually miss during an outage.
- Central air conditioning. The extra headroom over an 8.5 kW unit is what makes running a compressor practical on backup power.
- Extended outages. Storm and ice-belt regions where power can be out for days and refueling a portable is not realistic.
- Basements with sump pumps. Flood prevention that does not depend on anyone being home to start a generator.
- Cold-climate sites. Sub-zero 24-volt starting rated to -22 degrees F with no warming kit.
Engine and control
Power comes from the Champion Milwaukee Series 717cc OHV commercial V-twin running at 3,600 RPM, producing 12,500 watts on propane and 11,000 watts on natural gas. The engine uses Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic oil with a 1.5-quart capacity and shuts itself down on low oil to protect itself. Advanced sound dampening and a low-tone muffler hold operating noise near 63 dBA - about the level of a normal conversation - and the gull-wing enclosure opens for full access to the engine and control panel during service.

Frequently asked questions
How is the 100179 different from the 100177?
Capacity and switch size. The 100177 is 8.5 kW with a 50-amp, 12-circuit ATS50. The 100179 is 12.5 kW with a 100-amp, 16-circuit ATS100, which is what allows central air conditioning and a longer list of backed-up circuits.
How many circuits can it back up?
Sixteen. The ATS100 is a 12-space load center accepting up to four tandem breakers, in a NEMA 3R outdoor-rated enclosure.
Will it run central air conditioning?
In many homes, yes - that is the practical reason to step up from 8.5 kW. Compressor starting current varies by unit, so have your electrician run the load calculation against the specific condenser before committing.
How much power do I actually get on natural gas?
11,000 watts on natural gas versus 12,500 watts on propane. Size the backed-up load against the figure for your fuel.
How cold can it start?
The sub-zero 24-volt starting system is rated to operate down to -22 degrees F with no warming kit, and the onboard charger maintains the battery between outages.
What routine maintenance does it need?
Oil and filter changes using Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic (1.5-quart capacity), air filter and spark plug service on the manufacturer schedule, and monitoring of the weekly self-diagnostic test. Low oil triggers an automatic shutdown to protect the engine.
