What 1000 gsm means here
Gsm is grams per square meter, and it is the honest way to compare one microfiber towel against another. General-purpose wiping cloths run 200 to 300 gsm. Detail and buffing towels sit around 350 to 500. At 1000 gsm this is squarely a drying towel: the pile is deep enough to hold a large volume of water instead of pushing it around, which is what lets a single towel take a whole vehicle or a full glass wall without going saturated. Deep pile is also soft pile, so the towel stays safe on paint and polished surfaces. Spread over 20 x 40 inches, 1000 gsm works out to roughly half a kilogram of fabric per towel, and you can feel that in the hand.
What it is for
Drying is a different job from wiping, and it asks different things of a towel. A drying towel has to hold water without becoming saturated halfway across the surface, and it has to give that water up in the wash so it can go straight back into service. Deep plush pile does both. How to use it
Lay the towel flat over the wet surface and draw it toward you rather than scrubbing, then fold to a dry section as each face loads up. A 20 x 40 towel gives you several dry working faces before it needs to come out of rotation, which is what makes the larger format faster in practice and not just larger on paper. On paint, rinse the surface well first: a drying towel is soft, but any grit left on the panel is still grit.
Care
Wash microfiber on its own, with no fabric softener and no bleach, and dry on low or no heat. Fabric softener coats the fibers and will quietly ruin the absorbency you bought the towel for. A towel this heavy holds a lot of water coming out of the wash, so give it room in the dryer. Keep drying towels separate from towels used with wax, polish or solvents so the pile stays clean and open.
